Empowering BWSFA for Sustainable & Equitable Seaweed Mariculture Growth and Market Presence

With farms established and new farmers trained, BWSFA was ready for its next leap: building autonomy and reaching markets. This project, backed by the Blue Social Challenge Fund, was about giving women seaweed farmers the tools to run their operations independently while testing the waters of value-added products.

For the first time, members became certified boat captains, giving them the power to manage farm logistics without relying on the freelance men boat captains that often become busy during the tourist season. At the same time, the Association began exploring processing and packaging — small steps toward transforming raw seaweed into dried seaweed and consumer-ready goods.

Highlights

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen boved no.

Outcomes

The project gave BWSFA something priceless: a spark of independence. Licensed captains meant women could lead seaweed operations from start to finish. The beginnings of packaging and processing hinted at a new future where Belizean seaweed could move beyond bulk sales and into branded consumer markets.

Legacy

This project bridged the gap between farming and branding. It gave BWSFA the confidence and skills to take on larger institutional projects, like the Belize Fund, while also inspiring the innovation and product diversification that would later come to life under BSCF Project #2 and SICA AZUL.
