Empowering BWSFA: Strengthening Sustainable Seaweed Mariculture through Farming, EcoTourism and Marketing

BWSFA has always believed that seaweed is more than farming — it’s about community, culture, and education. With support from IISD, this project pushed those dimensions forward by connecting seaweed to ecotourism and outreach.

It was about inviting Belizeans — and the world — to see seaweed not just as a product, but as an experience. From establishing a biodiversity-protecting seed bank to piloting seaweed tours and engaging schools, the project made seaweed a story everyone could be part of.

Highlights

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen boved no.

Outcomes

The project proved that seaweed could be a storytelling tool as well as a product. It opened new income streams in tourism and strengthened national awareness of seaweed’s potential for food security and livelihoods.

Legacy

This initiative reinforced the idea that seaweed belongs not just in export markets, but also in classrooms, communities, and tours. It laid the groundwork for packaging, storytelling, and branding innovations under SICA AZUL.
